From the beginning, I was engrossed with this book. The Greek mythology, the 'starcrossed' lovers...I couldn't get enough. The characters were interesting and intense. The storyline itself was fascinating. From the first time they met, Helen and Lucas hated each other so much that the urge to kill was stronger than anything else. Helen tried to understand why she was feeling such an immediate hatred for someone she'd never set eyes on before, but it wasn't until Lucas explained to her that they are demigods, controlled by the Fates, that she really understood. And even then she couldn't have guessed the role the Fates would play in their lives. Helen and Lucas were destined to be together, but destined to be pulled apart. How do you defy destiny?
Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.
As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart. (Goodreads)
Some reviewers on Goodreads have said that Starcrossed is too similar to Twilight. I will admit to thinking that certain aspects of Starcrossed felt very similar to Twilight, but that in no way took away from what a spectacular story Starcrossed is. I think my only issue with this book is the author's overuse of long, drawn-out descriptions of the characters' actions. Sometimes less is more.
I really enjoyed Starcrossed, and I look forward to reading Dreamless when it's published. I need to know how Lucas and Helen will cope with the knowledge they've gained as to who they are and what their futures hold.
